Idaho Family Reading Week

For 20 years the Idaho Commission for Libraries has sponsored Idaho Family Reading Week, a celebration of families reading together. The theme for 2016 is "Laugh it Up! at Your Library". Celebrations are planned to encourage parents and caregivers to connect with their children by reading aloud and sharing favorite books to inspire them to become lifelong learners.

“We know from research that parents play an important role as their child’s first teacher, and Idaho libraries are uniquely prepared to help parents and their children discover the joy of reading,” Idaho State Librarian Ann Joslin said. “As children progress from developing a foundation of early literacy skills through learning to read in the primary grades and reading to learn in the upper elementary grades, what happens in the home matters. Families who read together create lasting memories and also provide an opportunity to reinforce parents’ values and expectations.”

In celebration of Idaho Family Reading Week, Emmett Public Library will partner with Kenneth J. Carberry Elementary School for the second year to bring you Family Reading Night. Join us at Carberry on the evening of Thursday, November 17th from 6-7:30 for reading, fun, and family-togetherness!

Then, join us at the library on Saturday, November 19th at 1:00 p.m. as we welcome Idaho author and illustrator, Jeremy Billups. Jeremy will read from his children's book, Bearded -- a delightful story of a bear with a beard who travels the world. There will be copies of the book available for purchase, following the event.
